Building a new generation of champions

By Jerry W. Kram

It was a milestone year for Parshall Braves basketball, as both the boys and girls teams made to the North Dakota State Class B Tournament. Last week, White Horse Woman Outreach and the MHA Tribal Council sponsored a basketball camp to help build the next generation of champions.

Wendi Wells organized the camp with the assistance of the coaches and players on the Braves team. She said while this camp was in Parshall, it was open to all communities on the reservation. She said future camps will be held around the reservation. The camp was open to all second to seventh graders and about 57 youngsters signed up. Wells said the camp couldn’t have happened without the community support.

"We have community leaders, coaches and players – all sorts of people – out here today," Wells said.

Wells said basketball was a big part of her life growing up, and camps like this one were important in developing her own skills. However, players who wanted to get better had to travel to Minot, Williston or even farther to participate in quality basketball camps.
