Area vets appointed to state committee

By Edna Sailor

Last week, Governor Jack Dalrymple re-appointed Dave Hilleren of New Town to a three year term on the Administrative Committee on Veterans Affairs (ACOVA). Kenneth Hasby and Hal Weninger, members of the Beck-Sherven Post in New Town were re-appointed to the committee as well.

The three men are veterans of the Vietnam War. Hilleran and Weninger served in the US Army. Hasby served in the US Navy. They are also members of the North Dakota Vietnam Veterans of America (V.V.A.) Hilleran currently serves as American Legion Beck-Sherven Post 290 Commander in New Town.

At a time when service to veterans is undergoing many changes at the national level, Commander Hilleran finds the work that ACOVA accomplishes to be particularly significant.

"The work for our veterans is important to every veteran who has served and those who are still serving," Hilleran said. "These appointments allow us to stay on top of what is happening for our veterans in North Dakota. With three of us serving from New Town, we can keep local veterans and their families informed as well."

While on the ACOVA Hilleran will serve on several subcommittees. The ACOVA oversees the expenditures of the Post War Trust Fund interest earnings, legislative laws concerning veterans, North Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Governing board of the Veterans Home.
