Anglers ‘Bite the Ice’ taking home big prizes and big fish

Another Bite the Ice on “The Hook” fishing tournament is in the books with nearly 300 participating in the third annual event.
Seven hundred tickets were sold, eclipsing the inaugural event in 2007 by 200 tickets and 291 people participated in the derby, which is also up from the past two years.
Numerous prizes, including the grand prize of a 2009 Arctic Cat Prowler UTV were given away throughout the day Saturday. Anglers fished for walleye, perch and catfish and children’s prizes were included in the mix.
The tournament, hosted by the Parshall Promoters and the New Town Chamber of Commerce, went off without a hitch and was held on a pleaseant day, unlike previous years in which the temperature was much colder. Bite the Ice was sponsored by the KX Television Network and Clear Channel Radio.
There was also debate on whether the tournament was going to take place at all. Heavy snow throughout the winter left numerous rivers and lakes in North Dakota with thin ice because of the insulation of the snow. A Promoters committee analyzed the Lake Sakakawea ice surface, made some modifications and held the tournament as scheduled.
