A history lesson in 3-D
What are these students doing?
No, they are not at the optometrist’s office. They are examining late 19th century stereoscopic photographs using “lorgnettes.”
These images were taken with a double lens camera and when viewed through a stereoscope are 3-dimensional in effect.
Parshall students of teachers Bobbi Larsen and Ruth Zacher had the opportunity to see photographs taken at Like-a-Fishhook village in 1863 and 1870 by pioneer photographers Stanley Morrow and John Carbutt.
The students were able to view the images through a “stereo viewer,” a device that allows a pair of 2-dimensional pictures to merge together into a single 3-dimensional photograph. The “lorgnettes” with practice can also be used to obtain the 3-D effect.
