It was a test, just to see how far the team has come and how it ranks against competition outside Section 6.
Even though the Garrison-Max-Central McLean Titans came out on the short end of a 9-5 score versus Hazen this past Friday night in Garrison, Coach Tyler Modlin said he is proud of how resilient the team is.
The game was added to the schedule. Modlin said he was expecting Hazen’s “B” team to compete. Instead it was the Astros, the “A” team. The Titans held their own. G-M-CM’s overall record is 12-2.
“It was a good game,” Modlin said. “We were down four, tied it and hung with them.”
What Modlin saw was the Titan’s depth and versatility. Looking across the diamond, the coach said Hazen is the best hitting team the Titans have faced this year.
“I’m very proud of our guys,” he said. “They (Hazen) brought their best – we did the same.”
The Titans headed to Watford City Wednesday, June 27, to play two counters. The Titans suffered a rare loss in the opener, dropping a 7-4 contest. The loss lit a fire under the Titans who exploded for a 14-4 five-inning win in the nightcap. Providing the fireworks was Luke Gehring who chose the perfect time to hit his first-ever home run. And it was a biggie. Cool Hand Luke launched a bomb for a grand slam. The Titans had made a statement: “Don’t mess with us.”
