Underwood defends Masters title,
claims second straight win with tie
The Westridge Golf Course team of Underwood, headed by Steve Cottingham, successfully defended its BHG Masters championship on the Garrison Golf Course Saturday despite finishing in a tie for the second consecutive year.
This year the five-member Underwood team finished with a team score of 333 (total of four top scorers), identical to the score posted by Garrison. A precedent established last year, counting the scores of the fifth member of each team, gave the title to Underwood. A year ago the Westridge team finished in a tie with Beulah when the Masters was played at Center.
While Garrison claimed two individual championships (of the five flights), those two scores (from the men’s championship and first flight) were more than offset by score differences in the men’s senior and especially the two women flights (women and senior women).
Cottingham’s winning Underwood team included Kyle Snyder, first flight; Graydon Ash, senior men; Toni Cottingham (Steve’s wife), women, and Arlene Arndt, senior men. Ash claimed his fourth senior men’s trophy in the five-year history of the BHG Masters.
