Troopers take 8th at state
Girls golfers in upper echelon of 18-team field

The Garrison girls golf team continues its tradition of advancing to compete in a state Class B golf tournament. This past week, the team placed in a tie for 8th in a field of 18 teams.
It’s one of the better finishes for a Trooper girls team since the streak of appearing in a state tournament began in 2000. The best finish was third in 2005. In 2000, the girls team placed sixth. In 2001 and 2008 the team also finished 8th.
Since 2000, the only year the Troopers failed to make state was 2013.
Rising star Mackenzie Jacobson finished just outside the top 10, missing All-State honors by one stroke. Mackenzie finished 12th in a field of 106 golfers.
As a team, the girls peaked at the proper time, shooting season-lows both days of the tournament (408 and 403).
The team has a bright future. The lone senior is Emily Giffey. The remainder of the team is comprised of two 10th graders – Mackenzie Jacobson and Kelsea McDowell, a pair of freshmen, Ally Behles and Grace Scheresky, and seventh grader Emily Jaeger.
Coach Elizabeth Schieler shared how the girls did out of 106 individuals and 18 teams:
Day 1: Jada Mattson from Heart River and Kaitlyn Hubrig from Lidgerwood-Hankinson-Fairmount ended the day tied for the lead both shooting an 82.
On the team side of things the Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter team edged out South Border ending the day with a 377 and a one stroke lead.
