Troopers good, not good enough
Fall to Surrey in lightning-shortened game

It’s a mark in the loss column, but if you ask members of the Garrison-Max Troopers football team, the positives far outweigh the negatives.
The Troopers opened the season this past Friday, losing to the Surrey Mustangs 14-6 in a game that was called at the half due to lightning.
After the Mustangs had chalked up 14 points, the Troop’s Nick Stiefel scored on an 18-yard touchdown run to begin the second quarter. The two-point conversion was a run by QB Tyler Jacobson that failed.
Coach Jason Mattheis observed that the team did a lot of things well. “But we just missed on a couple of scoring opportunities.”
It all comes down to timing. The coach is optimistic these wrinkles can be worked out without much difficulty.
Mattheis said with momentum in their favor, the spirit at half was high.
“We thought we were in pretty good shape … and we thought that we were in position to make some good things happen,” Mattheis said.
“It’s tough to come away with a loss when we thought we played pretty good football,” he lamented.
The Troopers moved the ball well at times and gained a lot of confidence in the ability of the offense. But once again, the team’s Achilles’s heel is giving up too much on the ground to a team that was bigger and more physical than the Troopers expected.
