Troopers fall to Holsteins
The Garrison-Max Troopers fought hard in their homecoming contest this past Friday against New Salem-Glen Ullin, but in the end it was another mark in the loss column. The Holsteins jumped on top at the 6:36 mark when Jared Kautzman found a wide open Jarad Wolf streaking down the sideline. Tossing up an aerial, Wolf gathered in the ball in full stride, scoring on a 60-yard play. The Troopers answered in the second when Cody Hagen connected on a 1-yard TD pass. The PAT failed and at intermission the score was 8-6 New Salem-Glen Ullin. In the second half the Holsteins dominance took its toll and NS-GU prevailed. Trooper Head Coach Cory Volk said in spite of the loss, the game was a lot of fun. "We battled hard and hung in there for a while but New Salem just had too many weapons," Volk said. One of the thorns in the Troopers’ side all night was Jarad Wolf, whom Volk called a serious dude. "He was a tough blocker on offense, he caught several passes including the first TD, and defensively he just made so many plays," Volk said. "I’d say he hurt our offense more then anything. He made so many tackles at the line of scrimmage that he basically shut us down." Volk said that in going through statistics from the night he was surprised the Troopers hung around as long as they did. "We didn’t light it up offensively," Volk observed. "We had one long drive but other than that we didn’t keep anything sustained." Volk points to the turning point in the game as being in the third quarter when the Troopers went for it on fourth and one and didn’t convert.
