Troopers fall at districts

It has never been more important to play at a high level during the regular season and get that number one district tournament seed.
The Washburn Cardinals are this year’s number one and not only do they have a first round bye, but no matter how they do in their games this week in the District 10 volleyball tournament, they are guaranteed to move on to the regional tournament.
Thus the action on the first day involved the other four teams, playing in regional qualifying games. The Underwood Comets faced the Garrison-Max Troopers first, while the Wilton-Wing Miners finished the night against the Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky Trojans.
In the first game, the Troopers put out a good effort with the Garrison-Max seniors Lauren Pechacek and Brittny Riemer providing a large amount of kills from the front row, but the all-around team play from the Comets won out in every set.
Abby Landenberger’s six kills, five aces and 20 digs led the way for a team that always managed to get a point when they needed one most. The key for the Comets was their ability to defend against the heavy hits thrown at them; Taylor Sorenson and Payton Koenig were instrumental, along with Landenberger, in coming up with much-needed digs to top the Troopers in straight sets, 27-25, 25-22, 25-22.
In an odd tournament bracketing placement, number two seed TL-M-M and number three seed Wilton-Wing played each other in the first round regional qualifier.
The Trojans’ biggest advantage is that they have the team makeup to always have someone in the front row that can slam it down and when they get the proper passing and setting rhythm… it’s hard to stop that train.
