A neighborly match against the Garrison Troopers and the Max Cossacks ended with the visiting team trooping over the Cossacks, 57-39, Thursday evening.
The game began 15 seconds in with Connor Kerzmann breaking the ice with a three-point basket for the Troopers, He would set a pattern, doing the same thing a minute into the second quarter. In all, the six foot junior would seal the deal with five triples – the most scored by a player that night – throughout the game.
On the Cossacks side, Erick Talbott would have two at the beginning and end of the game, and Yellowbird in the third.
The first quarter was very close, the two teams only a few points away from each other. Not long after Kerzmann got the scoreboard lit up, Matt Talbott and Ben Scheresky did their own work, bringing the score up 4-3 – the only time the Cossacks would have the lead. A three-pointer from Erick Talbott brought the Cossacks to being behind by one. Kerzmann followed with a two-pointer, and then the Cossack senior Jayden Whanger with one of his own, again bringing the Cossacks to a one-point margin. Norenberg was at the free-throw line again at the two minute mark, but his shots were unsuccessful. The Troopers held the lead, 13-10 at the end of the quarter.
The two teams went back and forth during the first half of the second quarter. However, a streak of shots from Braxton Iglehart and TJ Syvertson pushed the Troopers to a 16-point lead. With four two-pointers and three of four free-throws, this was Syvertson’s most productive quarter; the 6’1 forward scored 23 points during the game.
With less than a minute on the clock, Matthew Talbott promptly deposited two free throws in the basket, bringing the margin up slightly to 31-17 in the Troopers favor at halftime.
