Troopers bow out

The Garrison Troopers boys’ basketball season came to a screeching end Tuesday night at the hands of Wilton-Wing. The Miners, No. 2 coming in, rebounded from a loss against archrival Washburn this past Saturday to eliminate Garrison 55-49.
Max shocked the Troopers in the district opener, 45-42, on a last second shot by Weston Delzer. In spite of two heart-breaking losses, Coach Jason Mattheis said he thought the team played well in both contests. He tipped his hat to the Cossacks for keeping the Troopers off balance. (Garrison had defeated Max earlier in the year, 74-57).
The problem in the opener, according to Mattheis, was that the Troop stopped looking to attack the rim and played more from the perimeter. Max was able to take advantage.
“We did just enough to stay in the game, but Delzer hit a tough, contested shot at the buzzer to get the win,” the coach said.
Mattheis said he thought Garrison responded well against the Miners. He said it was the most complete game the team played all season.
“We wanted to go out playing our best basketball, and I think we did that,” Mattheis said. “We were able to take away the things that Wilton was good at, which kept us in the game the whole way.”
Dillon Loper, who was playing with an injured ankle, played a tremendous game, Mattheis said.
