Troopers advance; Max falls

The No. 2 seed Garrison Troopers had to use the back door this past week at the District 10 Tournament in Washburn to secure a spot in next week’s Region 5 Tournament. But for the Max Cossacks, their bid to join the Troopers, Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky and Washburn, came up just short, and their season is over.
Wrestling the district crown from the Cardinals, last year’s champs, TLMM breezed through district competition. Being the No. 1 seed, the Trojans secured a first round bye. In their opening game this past Friday, the Trojans dispensed with Wilton-Wing 55-44. Then, in the championship game, a rematch against Washburn, the Trojans prevailed big time, defeating the Cards 67-50.
In regional qualifier games, the Troopers held off a stubborn Wilton-Wing squad 53-49. Levi Hummel was a man possessed, knocking down 27 points for the Troop. Mykle Rud added 17.
The Cinderella run by the Max Cossacks came to an end in the other regional qualifier. Center-Stanton needed overtime to subdue a determined Max squad 46-43. The Cossacks held a five-point lead heading into the final frame, but the Wildcats clawed their way back to tie at the end of regulation. Nick Thompson led the way this night, scoring 13 and Colton Schroeder added 11.
Reflecting on the tournament, Coach Jade Larson said things didn’t turn out like he had envisioned, but he’s proud at how the team persevered.
