Klein, Price near state qualifying times

Put Jon Price’s name in the school record book. The junior distance runner eclipsed a pair of school records at meets this past week.
At Rugby, April 28, Price set the benchmark in the 3200m run, clocking a time of 10:24.58. The time is more than 12 seconds less than the previous mark set in 2008. That record was also held by Jon. But he wasn’t done. In the 1600m run, also at Rugby, he turned in a time of 4:43.29. That cut about eight seconds off the previous record set by Drew Gehring in 2007.
Jon placed first in the 3200m, and second in the 1600m run. Both times are within five seconds of qualifying for state.
Brittney Klein is also knocking on the door of state qualifying. The senior was timed in 2:27.65 in the 800m run – a mere 1.65 seconds from state qualifying time.
Melaas said this is the best the two have ever run. But he predicts the best is yet to come – if the weather breaks.
“They both need to train a little harder in the next couple of weeks,” he said. “We may train through a couple of the next few meets to get ready for regionals. I would expect that they both should easily qualify for state in the next few meets.
But that’s not a given, he pointed out.
