The Garrison Troopers girls’ varsity basketball team picked up its first district win of the season this past Saturday in McClusky, bringing home a convincing 63-53 victory over the Coyotes. Leading the way for the Lady T’s was Sam Lind who tossed in 20 points. Sam also showed her dominance, dishing off 13 assists (a new school record erasing one held by Sarah Gehring who had 11). She picked up eight steals as well. Brooke Haugen also proved her mettle, canning 18 from inside.
The win made the coaching staff smile.
“Balanced scoring kept Sheridan County on its heels,” Coach Sandra Essler said. “They (Coyotes) also were in early foul trouble. It was a good team effort.”
The win gives the Troopers a 1-2 record in the district.
But come Monday, it was a different story. The Minot Our Redeemers Lady Knights walked away with a 47-25 win over the Troopers on Garrison’s home court. Haugen was leading scorer, but she tallied only eight.
Essler said the Troopers just came out flat.
“(We saw) poor perimeter shooting. The Knights were hot from the field; playing pressure ½-court defense, which was very effective against us,” she said.
The Knights’ Riley Ringoen led all scorers with 25.
Since coming back after the first of the year, Lind, the spark plug of the team, has become a popular player – with opposing defenses.
