Troop drubbed by No. 2
Troop drubbed by No. 2
The Velva Aggies showed those who attended Friday night’s home opener of the Garrison-Max Troopers football team why they have been state Class A champions eight out of the past 11 years – and why they are rated No. 2 in the state in early season polls.
Velva struck early, then capitalized on three Trooper turnovers in the first quarter to romp, 45-zip. Velva opened with a 10-play 46-yard drive capped by a Josh Weidler TD pass from QB Tyler Ystaas.
After the ensuing kickoff, the Troop fumbled on their first possession. Two plays later it was 12-0 Aggies. The Troopers bobbled the hike on their next possession as well. Twenty seconds later Velva made it 19-0. And before the quarter was out Velva had reached paydirt again to lead 25-0. The Aggies made it look easy.
Coming in, Coach Cory Volk and his stable of young Troopers showed some optimism – especially after routing New Town 48-8 the week before.
“Yeah, Friday night was kind of disappointing,” Volk said.
