With the girls having had their weekend at the McLean County tournament back in December, it was finally the boys’ turn to step onto the court and compete in their iteration of the long-standing annual tradition -- taking place from Jan 7-9th in Underwood.
By the end of the tournament, there was no doubt that the Turtle Lake-Mercer Trojans were the well-deserved winners of the first place trophy, defeating Washburn in the championship game 63-43.
In the seventh place game, the Underwood Comets took down the Max Cossacks 72-65. Underwood’s Matt Landenberger tallied a game-high 31 points in the win. Max’s Dylan Kinn topped his team with 21.
The Hettinger Black Devils beat the Garrison Troopers for fifth place. Pulling ahead by 11 points by halftime, Hettinger managed to hold off the troopers for the entire second half, ending with a 45-35 score.
Ryan Fulkner for the Black Devils and Will Robinson for the Troopers both lead their teams with 14 points on the night.
In the wild third place game, the Bismarck JV Demons overcame the Center-Stanton Wildcats, 58-50. The Wildcats started the game on a 14-0 run highlighted by Wendlin Berger, but that lead was completely erased by halftime.
Center-Stanton’s Shae Brown tried to keep his team in the running, throwing down 31 points and several three pointers in the fourth quarter, but the balanced attack of the Demons was too much to overcome. Jaxon Fitterer for Bismarck led his team with 18.
The championship game came down to the Turtle Lake-Mercer Trojans and the Washburn Cardinals.
