Shootout opens boys season
Max, Warriors, Troop get wins

The inaugural McLean County Shootout is in the books. And by all indications, coaches and players seem to have liked the new format. Twelve teams competed in the two-day tournament that saw games played in Wilton and Washburn.
Trooper Head Coach Jason Mattheis said he thought the new format was OK. “It definitely was not as exciting as playing in a tournament, but it was nice to play a couple of teams that we won’t see during the season,” he said.
Daryl Bearstail, coach of the White Shield Warriors, said it was good to be a part of the shootout.
“The boys had fun and we learned from the experience,” he said.
Cossacks
Beginning the season 3-0 is Max. The Cossacks took care of business against Surrey Dec. 2, then went 2-0 in the shootout, defeating White Shield 75-47 this past Friday, and nipping Glen Ullin-Hebron 60-56 Saturday. Head Coach Jade Larson likes what he sees so far.
“The team has started off well,” he said. “I am very pleased with their intensity and teamwork.”
Against Surrey, the Cossacks were able to create a lot of turnovers and turn them into scores. Larson said the scoring in all three games has been balanced between his top six players. “I am really looking for that to continue and for us to keep generating turnovers,” Larson said.
