The Garrison Troopers could have been called the Garrison Roadrunners because they tricked the Grant County Coyotes out of a win in Elgin last Tuesday.
The game, which followed the wins against Central McLean on Sept. 28 and Shiloh Christian on Sept. 30, ended 3-2.
“We came out the shute swinging, literally,” said head coach Tina Irish.
The girls defeated the Coyotes in the first set, but lost the second and third sets. From there, the Troopers came back victorious in the fourth and fifth sets.
“They wanted the win and took it. That was their goal, to beat the undefeated team in our region,” Irish said. “They’re a strong team, they were undefeated.”
At the time of the game, the Coyotes were undefeated in Region 5 play. Now, the Troopers and Coyotes are tied for second place, each having a record of 5-1. Center-Stanton currently is first, with a 6-1 record.
“We played very scrappy,” Irish said. “We don’t usually consider ourselves a scrappy team, but we played scrappy for the win.”
The back row did well again, Irish noted, and hitters Karli Klein and Madelin Hunt came out swinging.
Irish was amazed to see the Troopers, as well as their fans, celebrating so much, even more so than their Homecoming win against Shiloh Christian.
