MANDAN — With a 26-51 win against the New Salem-Almont Holsteins under their belt, the Garrison Lady Troopers graduated from the quarterfinals to the semi-finals at the Region 5 Girls Basketball Tournament on Monday evening.
In day one of regional tournament, the starters – Mia Gehring, Kaitlyn Zook, Cara and Emily Schlehr and Karli Klein – demonstrated their mettle during the first half of the game, when the Garrison five played right up to less than a minute when Sadie Majeres was substituted with Gehring.
It was Gehring who started things off with a long three, quickly accompanied by a bucket, gaining five points in a matter of seconds two minutes into the first quarter. After Karli Klein’s basket near the five minute mark, the Troopers held an unsoiled lead until New Salem-Almont’s Mackenzie Brandt scored, giving the Holsteins a two-point boost which put them on the board. However, the Troopers bounced back and took control of the game, scoring six more points until Brandt came back with a three on the buzzer, putting the Troopers eight points ahead at the end of the first quarter, 5-13.
