After five fun-filled Tuesdays of golf, the Garrison Youth Golf Program ended for the summer.
A total of 43 participants between the ages of seven and 13 participated in the program, which took place every Tuesday in June at Garrison Golf Course. This arm of the program is geared to beginner and intermediate golf players, explained program coordinator Tom Fitzgerald.
On June 29, the youth played the course and celebrated with a pizza party, sponsored by the golf course.
Fitzgerald and his wife, Claire, write grants to help the program. That help includes securing instructors from Bismarck. “The people we bring in from Bismarck are used to dealing with young kids in golf,” Fitzgerald said. Volunteers from Garrison also help to provide supervision.
For the past few years, older youth have received private instruction from Shane Hannegrefs, a Max native who is the head golf coach for Minot Public Schools. In June, he provided lessons to 17 older youths on Mondays.
“He does it for nothing,” Fitzgerald noted. “He basically says he’s paying it forward. That’s the type of guy he is.”
