NEW SALEM —In a nailbiting will-they-or-won’t-they scenario building up during the quarterfinals and semifinals of the Region 5 volleyball tournament, the Garrison Lady Troopers took both games and advanced to the tournament’s final round. T h e L a d y T r o o p e r s ’ quarterfinals match against the New Salem-Almont Holsteins kicked off the day, as well as the tournament. “The girls played well,” said head coach Brooke Walter. “We had a little slip up at the second set and that’s okay. We came out the last two games swinging and playing our game.” While the Lady Troopers easily took the first set, 25-15, things were different after. The girls from New Salem-Almont took an early lead and while the Lady Troopers persevered, it wasn’t until about halfway through the set when the latter – through their merit and the Holsteins’ error – got close. Eventually, the score tied 16-16 and as the scoreboard lit up, the teams were continually tied.
As Garrison inched closer to 25, New Salem-Almont came back. Eventually, the second set ended 23-25 in the Holstein’s favor.
