The Garrison-Max Troopers volleyball team’s season came to an end this past Thursday at the hands of Sheridan County. The Coyotes shutout the Troopers 3-0 to secure a berth in this week’s Region 5 Volleyball Tournament in Center.
Taking the district title was the Turtle Lake-Mercer Trojans who blitzed Wilton 3-0. In the other region qualifier, Underwood prevailed over neighboring Washburn by a count of 3-1.
Selected for the all-district team, representing the Troopers, was Brianna Johnson. No Trooper was named to the All District 10 All-tournament team.
While the season came to a sudden end, Coach Jess Turck is looking forward to next season. She noted the Troopers would lose only two players to graduation – Elisa Duben and Sierra Lassila. That leaves a strong nucleus of players coming back for the first-year head coach.
“We have a great group of girls returning next year,” Turck said. “We have a lot of talent returning and have huge potential for next year.”
Learning the head coaching ropes kept Turck busy this season. She said she hopes to get the team more visible in the community next year.
Even though the girls didn’t have a winning record they learned a lot this season, Turck said.
“We really had a lot of work to do, we trained the girls in new techniques and rotations. It all takes time ... but if you want to really build a program it all needs to be done,” she said.
One thing that excites Turck is that the team showed it is eager to learn.
