Girl’s golf rescheduled from spring to fall

Girls golf will be among the fall sports available to students in Garrison, as well as smaller schools throughout the state.
The North Dakota High School Activities Association made the announcement that Class B girl’s golfers would be making the transition from the spring to the fall.
Schools in Class A, which are traditionally larger, play golf in the fall.
The move is something that Jason Ermer, athletic director for Garrison Public School, said was “a long time coming.”
“There’s been a push, periodically, in the Class B ranks,” Ermer explained. Resistance was fueled by concern from coaches that they could potentially lose members of their golfing team to other sports, he said.
“I think it’s the rise of softball that pushed a lot of coaches over the top because they’re losing girls to softball,” Ermer said.
For girls who want to join the golf team, Ermer said a sign-up table for golf – as well as all fall sports – is set up in the lobby at Garrison High School.
Last year, the Garrison school’s girl’s golf team was made up of two students, Erner said, noting that he doesn’t feel the school can fill the golf team this year, mainly because a number of students gravitate toward volleyball.
“I don’t think it’s a positive move for Garrison,” he said.
While Garrison is a school that allows duel activities – that is, allowing students to play more than one sport – there is still a question of whether students will choose to or not, Ermer said.
