Fishing tournaments get green light

Despite all April and May fishing tournaments being canceled this year, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department said this week it expects no other tournament permits will be pulled for the rest of the year.
According to a press release from the department, Game and Fish does not intend to revoke any fishing tournament permits for the remainder of this year, unless the coronavirus pandemic warrants such a decision.
This leaves the door open for June and July tournaments like the Dakota Walleye Classic in Beulah and Governor’s Cup in Garrison.
The department previously revoked all permits for April and May tournaments, essentially canceling those events for the year.
Fisheries chief Greg Power said a letter was sent to all tournament sponsors with strong public safety recommendations, including physical distancing guidelines, for those who were still planning on conducting fishing tournaments.
Though the department hopes to permit any currently-scheduled tournaments, it is restricting permits for rescheduled or new events.
