Cossacks coming into their own

The Max Cossacks’ girls’ basketball team is playing pretty well as of late. Just check the schedule. After starting the season 1-5, the ladies have reeled off four straight victories to even their record at 5-5.
The girls’ recent performance is putting a smile on first year Head Coach Michael Balaban’s face.
“The difference is … the ladies now believe in themselves and our program while staying healthy and out of foul trouble,” Balaban explained.
“The girls are working on defensive rebounding, which continues to hamper our overall game,” he added.
Balaban observes that the Lady Cossacks continue to allow way too many second and third opportunities for their opponents.
After the Cossacks’ game against Drake Tuesday night, there are only three home games remaining on the schedule. The final five games are all on the road. In spite of a daunting schedule, Balaban said he remains optimistic.
“We’ve been gearing up for our final nine games and all those double-headers in a row. However, I don’t believe it will affect our game,” he said.
Jan. 6, the Cossacks defeated Glenburn 52-43. Jan. 13, Max edged Washburn 49-47. This past Saturday, the win streak continued with a victory over Wilton 40-37. Max is now 2-1 in the district with the wins over the Cardinals and Miners. Both were home games.
