You could tell it on the players’ faces as the game slipped away Tuesday night – this wasn’t their night.
In a game that could have put the Garrison Troopers boys basketball team in position for a first round bye at the fast-approaching District 10 Tournament, it was the Washburn Cardinals who came to town and took it to the Troop, 65-45.
Not good for a Trooper boys team that averages nearly 70 points a game.
In the first half of the district twin bill, the Lady Cardinals also had an easy time of it, rolling past the Trooper girls 52-24. Kennedy Retterath scored nearly half the Washburn points, tallying 19. Spanky Clayton tossed in 12. No Trooper girl was in double figures.
In the nightcap, the Trooper boys missed numerous good looks at the basket. Washburn, being an opportunistic team, capitalized nearly every time on a Garrison squad that just seemed out of sync and a step or two slower than itsopponent.
A disappointed Coach Jason Mattheis said after the game the effort just wasn’t there.
Washburn had a well-balanced attack. Four players were in double digits, led by Kirk Sailer’s 17. Brett Schreiner threw in 15, Ryan Kerzman had 14 and Evan Eberle 11 for the redbirds.
