Youth archery ok’d to practice at the auditorium

BY TYSON SMEDSTAD

Youth archery is back in Garrison after an overwhelming interest in its first year.
Organizer Robert Miller from the youth archery program in Garrison and the National Archery in Schools Program came to ask the Garrison City Council at its regular meeting Monday night if the group could utilize the Garrison Auditorium for archery practice beginning after the Christmas holiday.
“This is a national program, what we do here is exactly what they do in Kentucky. It’s exactly what they do in California. That’s what NASP is,” Miller said.
Miller was the only certified instructor last year.
This year, there are five more instructors from Garrison and Max.
Last year, the group used the auditorium to practice once a week throughout the season.
There were between 40 and 45 kids that participated every week.
Miller is hoping to use the auditorium two to four hours per week for practice.
Grades four through twelve are invited to participate and complete, but students in third grade can also come.
“We invite third graders to get them acclimated to the system,” Miller said.
The group is sanctioned by the school, so they must adhere to social distancing policies and procedures.
The program is free to join and all equipment is provided so all kids, no matter their economic standing, have the opportunity to participate.
The council voted to waive the rental fees for the auditorium and approved the group to use the space.
