Teachers heading back to school

BY TYSON SMEDSTAD ZIEMANN
About ten local elementary and high school teachers are currently in school or headed back this summer to pursue Masters degrees, and one teacher is working towards her Doctorate.
There seems to be a common reason for going back to school amongst these teachers. Although a pay increase would seem to be the motivating factor, most say it's to become a better teacher.
“The biggest benefit is going to be helping myself grow in my teaching profession,” Darlene Ruud, Garrisons fifth-grade teacher, said.
Ruud was working on her Masters a few years ago, but stopped just a few credits shy. “My kids are now older and more independent so I finally decided now is the right time.” she said.
Jacque Schaible, Garrison sixth-grade teacher said learning should never stop, and I want to stay on top of the latest research and be great at what I do.”
She said that one drawback is time and time management, but she thinks it will help her remember what her students lives are like trying to balance everything in their lives.
