Stimulus funds to improve city streets

City officials in Garrison say they pride themselves on doing their best to provide quality streets for residents and visitors.
And when City Auditor Diane Affeldt told council members the city received more than $51,000 in federal stimulus money, aldermen knew exactly where that money should go – streets.
Unfortunately, the funds will be a drop in the bucket when it comes to the amount of areas in Garrison the council would like to see repaired.
“We’ll take the worst first and work down from there,” said city Maintenance Supervisor Alan Beyreis as he glanced over the laundry list of areas that need attention.
If all areas were repaired, the cost would be approximately $205,000. City officials had budgeted approximately $50,000 for repairs this year.
Council members said they anticipate crews with Bechtold Paving of Minot will be in town this week to begin patching trouble areas. Among the areas that will receive pavement will be the 2008 water main replacement area on Fourth Street SE and Second Avenue SE. The area is near Garrison Super Valu
