Safety first

Safety first

The Boy Scouts of America motto is: “Be prepared.”
In light of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., area schools are doing their Boy Scout best, taking steps to ensure students and staff are safe if an intruder enters a school building.
While some procedures are in place, school officials are erring on the side of caution.
This past week, school officials in Washburn conducted a lock-down drill. School officials at Max have held similar exercises. At North Shore-Makoti, the school has been in actual lock-down multiple times this school year. Those situations have been in reaction to incidents that have taken place in nearby communities.
A lock-down procedure is in place at White Shield. All doors are locked at the school, but individuals can exit the building. Law enforcement has also been contacted and asked to provide security ideas.
Superintendent Keith Jacobson said school officials feel confident in what the district has done.
No drills have taken place at Garrison schools to this point.
