Road issues continue to resurface

Road issues continue to resurface

By CHERYL ODDEN

One of the main topics of concern during Monday’s McLean County Commission meeting can be summed up in a single word – roads.
Ron Wagner, county road superintendent, addressed several road related topics with commissioners. On the heels of massive overland flooding this past spring, he said county road crews have been working to raise the grade on numerous county roads that were flooded and unusable for several months. When asked about progress, Wagner noted, “There are two more we would really like to get done (before winter).” Referring to the amount of roadwork that is needed and the limited time frame to accomplish the task, Wagner said progress has been “acceptable, but not where we would like to be.”
Part of the problem, he noted, is one that has become all too familiar; trained employees are lured by the oil industry where high paying jobs are plentiful. Commissioners agreed that the promise of higher wages in the oil patch makes it difficult to attract and retain workers.
