Newcomer brings life to SACA stage

Want to get hooked on Garrison and hooked on Dickens – just ask Lisa Maki and her husband Mike how easy it is.
Lisa is director of this year’s Sakakawea Area Council for the Arts production of “Tiny Tim’s Christmas.”
The two have lived in Garrison for about two years. In that short time they have jumped in with both feet getting involved in the community.
For Lisa, theater has been in her blood since childhood.
She was born in Grand Forks. At the age of 5, her family moved to Warren, Minn.
The draw of drama began during church Christmas programs. Her high school in Warren presented a musical each year as a fundraiser for the music department. Lisa cut her teeth in theater there, becoming involved while in junior high. It escalated until she was a senior when she was asked to be the student director. While in high school she also participated in one-act plays and speech.
Graduating from Warren in 1994, Lisa attended a community college in Thief River Falls, Minn. One of the draws, she said, was that the school had a small theater department. There, she took part in a number of aspects of theater.
In 1995, her parents moved to Bowman, N.D. Wanting to be close to family, she thumbed through a book of nearby colleges. She found Dickinson State University.
“I said, ‘that’s only 60 miles from home – hey, that’s where I’m going.’”
