‘Super’ explains budget surplus

‘Super’ explains budget surplus

“I’m wondering why our carryover is so huge?” Bonnie Nygard, Garrison School Board member since July, asked at a board meeting Monday evening.
The carryover at the end of the district’s fiscal year was $1,026,211, or up 54 percent from last year. Carryover, or budget surplus, is the amount the district showed in reserves June 30.
Superintendent Steve Brannan wasn’t surprised by the question.
“Some questions have come my way about the budget surplus,” Brannan said to the board.
“He said $200,000 of that amount is in committed funds – back payments to the faculty, stimulus money for building improvements, Title I, Special Ed, etc. We should be back close to $700,000 – $800,000 at the end of the school year.”
Brannan said, “It’s not really a clear picture of our district’s budget funds.”
