Local harvest underway

Local harvest underway

BY TYSON SMEDSTAD

With the temps being in the mid to high nineties this week, farmers are hoping the green wheat will finish drying up so they can get combining next week.
“Harvest has been progressing well,” said a local farmer.
A local grain elevator reported crops in the Garrison and surrounding areas were definitely hurt with the early summer heat and lack of moisture. Small grains are somewhat surprising. It is far from a bumper crop but somewhat better than most were expecting so far, according to the CHS elevator. Wheat is being harvested right now and most farmers are trying to find room on the farm for it as the prices are still below average. Early canola is running well. The half inch of rain last week will help our the later crops such as beans and corn but more moisture will be needed to finish off those crops.
