Legion’s Sky Lanterns return
Legion’s Sky Lanterns return
Launch to follow Community Worship Service
By STU MERRY
Floating quietly, gently, peacefully skyward. Twelve Sky Lanterns made their way into the night sky last year following the annual Community Thanksgiving Worship in Garrison.
This year, Garrison American Legion members, sponsors of the Sky Lanterns, anticipate more than 40 could make their trek into the dark night. And if Mother Nature cooperates, what a serene sight it will be.
This year’s Community Thanksgiving Service is Wednesday evening, Nov. 24 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church. The service begins at 7 p.m., with launching of the lanterns at 8 p.m. Launching will take place in the open lots behind the church.
Not knowing how the idea would be received in its inaugural year, 50 lanterns were purchased. Karen Meier, American Legion Adjutant and Auxiliary president, said the endeavor received an overwhelming positive response.
Anticipating stronger demand this year, the Legion secured about 250 lanterns. So far about 90 (each costing $19.50) have been purchased. Meier said she estimates about 40 will be set off that night – weather permitting.
