Gifts from the Heart is underway
By STU MERRY

The season of giving is here. And local entities are once again joining together to assure that less fortunate in the area have a blessed Christmas season.
Gifts from the Heart (GFH) and the Giving Tree campaign are underway. The kick-off for the Gifts from the Heart food drive began this past Wednesday at the annual non-denominational Community Thanksgiving Worship Service.
Donated non-perishable food items for the campaign are gathered through various means. St. Paul Lutheran Church, St. Nicholas Catholic Church and the Garrison Post Office serve as collection points. A hamper will be in the Post Office lobby to collect food donations during business hours.
Rural mail carriers will collect non-perishables from customers who have placed items in their mailboxes. Notices have been placed in boxes and delivered by mail carriers, notifying patrons of the drive.
The Giving Tree offers area residents the opportunity to purchase a Christmas gift for an individual anonymously. Each tree is decorated with stars that describe a gift request for someone less fortunate. Those who would like to purchase a gift can select one of the stars and inform a bank teller of their intended purchase. Giving Trees are at Garrison State Bank & Trust and BNC National Bank. After the item is purchased, it should be returned to the respective bank by Dec. 15. Items should not be wrapped, but the star must accompany the gift.Coppers,” or money collected by urchins during the Dickens Village Festival, benefit Gifts from the Heart.
