Eligibility, a priority

By STU MERRY

Eligibility requirements for Garrison High School athletes is being put under the microscope.

Garrison Superintendent Dr. Nick Klemisch said school officials continue to strive for transparency. One of those messages is to explain the changes that are coming to the extracurricular qualification process. Included is honing the guidelines for being eligible to participate in those activities.

At an open committee meeting last week, Klemisch recommended to the policy committee that the current eligibility policy be revised. The revision will place greater emphasis on academics by not allowing students with failing grades to participate in any extracurricular activities at the start of the second semester. If a student has more than one failing grade, they will not be able to practice. Grades and eligibility have been part of an ongoing discussion since school began.
