Block-long, kite festival kickoff summer season

At times it might have seemed like the winter of 2008-09 would never end. Finally, it has. And, even though springtime weather has been evasive. the Garrison community is ready to delve into summer.
Yes, finally, summer!
Saturday is the official start of summer – at least it is in Garrison. To celebrate, the Garrison Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Block-long Party. The event begins at noon on Main Street and is open to the public. This year’s featured item, nachos, will be available on a free-will basis. Proceeds will be donated to Skydance Sakakawea, a three-day kite festival at Fort Stevenson State Park.
Those who attend the Block-long are invited to support the fight against cancer by purchasing hot dogs and root beer floats from the BHG Sleepwalkers Relay for Life Team. Members of the team will provide the additional fare in front of BHG and will donate proceeds to the McLean County Relay for Life.
The Block-long is just the beginning of the weekend fun. The public is invited to attend the three-day kite festival. Skydance Sakakawea will be Saturday-Monday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Fort Stevenson State Park.
Touted as a fun family event, the 17th annual festival will include an assortment of kites flown by professional and amateur kite-fliers.
The kite festival is more than a spectator event. Those who attend are encouraged to bring their own kites or to purchase kites onsite. Throughout the event, kites can be purchased from Rena Rustad of Prairie Wind Kites.
