Base water rate inreases

By STU MERRY

The base rate consumers pay for water in Garrison is going up next month.

At their meeting Monday, at the recommendation of the Utilities Committee the council OK’d upping the charge $1, from $32.75 to $33.75. The council also laid out, the minimum, or base rate, will include the first 1,000 gallons of water. Each additional 1,000 gallons will be $4.50.

The minimum rate for bulk users will also be $33.75, up from $32.25. It also includes the first 1,000 gallons. Each additional 1,000 gallons is $12 for users from city hydrants and the water salesman.

City officials said the reason for the change is to counter future anticipated expenditures.

Following the meeting, city officials said that residents will only see a minimal increase in their utility bill. The garbage rate will decrease about $1 Jan. 1. The current rate is $13.76. The new contract with Waste Management is $12.75.

During the meeting, other municipal infrastructure issues were discussed, including a proposed major water main and sanitary sewer improvement project that could cost about $7 million.

Improvements to the water treatment plant are imminent.
