On Oct. 29, Terry and I were fortunate enough to participate and watch in amazement as WNBA players, current and retired; Big 12 Basketball players came together for one common cause: to raise money for breast cancer/mammogram testing for five small towns with a total of 2,500 residents.
Let me tell you a little about this amazing story. It took place in Coldwater and Ashland, Kans., two small town hospitals with their administrators joined forces to raise money so that every woman within their areas would be able to have a free digital mammogram and have transportation provided to the testing site, which the nearest is in Wichita, Kans., about a 2½-hour trip one way.
The game played on Oct. 29; the pink team was coached by Jackie Stiles, NCAA’s all-time leading scorer. She was the female version of “Pistol Pete” Maravich, and her assistant coach was Cynthia Cooper, one of the all time leading scorer’s in NCAA and WNBA respectively.
The white team was coached by Kristi Leeper-Meis, who took Fort Hayes State to the National Championship, and Ruth Riley, a current WNBA player. Shalee Lehning, a current WNBA starter, was also there, but did not play due to a dislocated shoulder. Each team had an equal number of WNBA players, Big 12 players and local high school girls.
