The Turtle Lake- Mercer McClusky Trojans moved in to the Region 5 semi-final game with a 62-39 win over the Standing Rock Warriors Monday night, March 8, at the Bismarck Civic Center.
The Trojans will take on the Wilton/Wing Miners in one semi-final game. Bismarck Shiloh Christian plays New Salem in the other semi-final game on Tuesday night.
Grant Singer was the leading scorer for the Trojans with 30 points; Shane Nelson added 11.
The Warriors put two players in double figures; Josh Penny and Christian Iron Shield both scored 14 points.
A strong Trojan defense held their opponent under forty points for the third straight game. They held the Warriors to just seven points within the first quarter.
The Trojans got on the board first with a bucket from Tucker Fylling at the 7:22 mark.
Tracy Irving put down a triple fifteen seconds later for the Warriors to take a 3-2 lead.
It took almost two minutes before Shane Nelson answered with a triple to put the Trojans in front, 5-3. Josh Penny got a deuce twenty seconds later for the Warriors to tie the game at five each.
Ryan Rauhauser put the Trojans in front, 7-5, with a deuce at the 4:00 mark. Penny answered with a deuce, fifteen second later, to tie the game at seven.
The Warriors defense put a chaser on Grant Singer in the first quarter and Singer was held scoreless until the 1:14 mark when he got a put-back. With 0:50 left, Singer got the steal and bucket for two and, as the first quarter clock wound down, he put down a short jumper for two and a 13-7 Trojans’ lead.
The Warriors scored first in the second quarter with Irving putting in a deuce and Christian Iron Shield a free throw to make the score 13-10, Trojans.
Singer lost the chaser for just a second at the 5:38 mark and got a bucket and a free throw for the Trojans to go ahead 16-10.
Iron Shield got back-to-back buckets to cut the Trojans’ lead to 16-14 at the 4:52 mark.
The Trojans then outscored the Warriors, 9-2, in the last 4:36 of the second quarter and took a 25-16 lead. Nelson put in a triple and double; Singer a pair of free throws; and Fylling made a deuce in the run. Iron Shield scored the Warriors’ two points.
Iron Shield scored first to start the third quarter with a deuce. Then Singer and Kirby St. John traded free throws.
At the 5:51 mark, Adam Peltier started a 12-0 run for the Trojans with a deuce. Singer scored the next three buckets; first from the right base line, then the left base line, and the third: a drive down the lane. Fylling gave Singer a break for a couple of seconds as he put down a pair of free throws.
Just a few seconds later, it was Singer with a steal and bucket to put the Trojans up 36-19.
