New Salem Holsteins stop Sheridan CountyCoyotes

The Coyotes came up on the short end of the score in the opening round of the Region 5 tournament at Mandan High School Monday night. The New Salem Holsteins defeated the Coyotes, 40-33, in the final game in the history of the Sheridan County Coyotes.
The Coyotes end their season with nine wins and thirteen losses. Karissa Erdmann and Kimberly Tkach led the Coyotes with nine points each. Emily Wolf led the Holsteins with 13 points.
The Coyotes got on the board first with Karissa Erdmann making a short jumper at the 6:48 mark.
The Holsteins’ first score came at the 5:15 mark when Hollie Toepke put in a deuce and Nicole Schroeder followed that up with a triple for a 5-2 Holsteins’ lead.
The Holsteins controlled the ball most of the quarter, slowing the game way down and then pressing after a bucket or turnover.
Then DeLayna Bueligen scored a couple of buckets after Coyotes’ turn-overs and put the Holsteins up, 9-2.
Kimberly Tkach got a couple of free throws at the 1:11 mark and a deuce seconds later to cut the Holsteins’ lead to 11-6 at the end of one.
Erdmann hit a jumper from the left side of the lane to start the second quarter and cut the Holsteins’ lead to 11-8. Emily Wolf got a put-back and Bueligen a deuce back-to-back to put the Holsteins in front 15-8.
Erdmann then put in a jumper from the right side and Tkach grabbed a loose ball and put it in to cut the Holsteins’ lead to 15-12 at the 2:36 mark.
Abigail Martwick got a blocked shot at the 0:34 mark. Tkach got the ball after the block by Martwick and went down and put in a triple at the 0:18 mark to tie the score at 15 to end the first half.
Neither team burned up the nets during the first half as the Coyotes shot 29% from the field and the Holsteins shot 24%.
In the third quarter the Coyotes’ defense held the Holsteins to one free throw and one field goal. The Coyotes were able to put nine points on the score board in the third.
