Wagner holds bookkeeper position at Co-op Elevator
Though trained in mechanical engineering, with a bachelor’s degree from NDSU to back it up, Ben Wagner works as the bookkeeper at the McClusky Co-op Elevator, a position he volunteered to try. After the former bookkeeper Marilyn Schneider retired, he thought he could do it. “I never took an accounting class in my life but I have a strong math background and learned the ‘accounting’ language as I went,” he added. The challenge in his work has been the end of the year reports, he stated. He prepares all the in-house data and the accountant (Nick Storhaug) then does the taxes and the compilation reports based on his work. “The profits of the business have either gone into shares or have been paid out in dividends,” he added. He also takes care of inventory control, accounts payable and receivables. He noted that Co-op Manager Brian Larson likes to keep the daily position records of bushels in and out personally so he (Wagner) doesn’t do much with those records.Wagner was raised in McClusky and graduated from McClusky High School in 1996. His parents were former McClusky teachers Les and Pat Wagner, with his mother, now a widow, still teaching elementary school in New Rockford. He has one sister Jessica, in Fargo.
