Veterans honored at Legion ceremony

Merwyn Krein and three other veterans were presented awards at the annual birthday party for the Goodrich American Legion and Auxiliary.
Krein was honored for his 21 years of service as Commander of the Albert Block Post #56.
During the program, ND American Legion Commander Don Weible spoke about Krein ‘s military service and civic activities. Krein received a draft notice in July of 1957, ordering him to report for duty in 1958.
According to Weible, Krein was so eager to serve his country that he immediately volunteered and reported to boot camp later the fall of ‘57. On completion of basic training, Krein trained first as a heavy motor mechanic, then as an aircraft mechanic.
Krein was subsequently stationed in Germany where he worked on the L-19 Bird Dog and the base general’s L-23 twin engine aircraft. Krein sailed back to the states on the USS Buckner and was honorably discharged in 1959.
Weible spoke of Krein’s dedication to his community. Not only has Krein been active in the Legion and the care of its grounds, Weible said, but he has served on the local school board, been a member of the park board, and a 4H leader.
