The Upper Sheyenne River Joint Water Resource Board (USRJWRB) met at the Union Grill in McClusky for their April 15 meeting. Chairman of the USRJWRB Board Ben Varnson presided with Secretary Charlene Varnson recording. County members are Barnes, Benson, Eddy, Foster, Griggs, McHenry, Nelson, Pierce, Sheridan, Steele, Stutsman and Wells.
Present were representatives from the various county water resource boards, local city and county officials, and other agencies concerned in the projects of the funding for the projects. Reports concerning local projects were heard and updated from the previous meeting’s report in March in Carrington. These include reports on the Ueland, Baldhill, Warwick, and Bouret Dams. A question on the location of obsolete dams was raised and the information resulting indicated that the areas in which dams are no longer locatable, need not be referenced further. Only the dams that are listed under some agency and on record need to be located and updated for current usage. Many dams in many areas were constructed in the WPA era and have long since been washed out, tilled over or otherwise rendered unusable.
Also reviewed was progress on various programs affecting water and water control: cattail/blackbird management, fisheries development, and the availability of rocks for various program including rip-rapping.
A report of Devils Lake Basin elevations and flows as of April 1, 2009 was presented. Devils Lake was at 1447.57’ msl, Stump Lake 1447.56’ msl, a slight rise in both since the March reading.
