Teacher for combination room experienced plus In the years of country one-room schools, many teachers gained experience of most or all grades in the elementary schools that they taught, plus what is now junior high or middle school grades. New teacher at McClusky Elementary, Deb Klemisch, gathered her kindergarten through six experience one grade at a time.
Klemisch notes that she regards the experience as a plus; giving her an overview of what to expect from each student in each grade in regard to reasonable standards for each subject. She knows from teaching sixth grade what a fifth grade student should learn during the year. Each student also has his or her own way of learning, according to Klemisch. “I learned what to expect at all levels, to better understand the curriculum, and I am able to shift gears for an individual child or class.” Klemisch, one of three children of Tony and Jan (deceased) Kielpinski of Kenosha, WI, graduated from St. Joseph’s High School and attended Cardinal Stritch College for two years there in Kenosha. Her brother Mark, a former teacher in the Mandan Public Schools, is now a “technology person” for that school district. Her sister, Kris Prentiss, Poway, CA, is a USPS letter carrier. Klemisch switched to Mary College and graduated with her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from that school, before it became the University of Mary. She also earned math and reading credentials for Title I from UM. After graduating from UM, Klemisch taught fourth grade at St. Joseph’s School in Mandan for two years, then taught third grade at Wolf Point, MT for one year. After marrying Dan, they lived in New Town for three years: she teaching first grade in Parshall one year, subbing one year, and then one year teaching in fifth grade. At the time, Dan was teaching junior high math class in New Town.
