Spring Fling dish garden creativity
Sheridan County Extension along with Sheridan County Soil Conservation District held 2021 Sheridan County Spring Fling on Wednesday, April 28, at the McClusky City
Hall, with approximately 14 persons attending. Tom Kalb was guest speaker. He handed out “Let’s Grow a Great Vegetable Garden!” and showed slides about gardening
for location, sunshine, water, and drainage. He also spoke on raised beds using pressure-treated lumber and other lumber. He noted the raised beds should be four by four feet, 6-8 inches deep and that it is not necessary to use fabric. For the soil, it should be a mix of about one-third topsoil, 1/3 sand, and 1/3 organic matter. Kalb spoke on the kind of vegetable and varieties that grow better in North Dakota: filet beans, Crockett; corn, Sweetness and American Dream; burpless cucumber, Summer Dance and Homemade Pickles; peas, Lincoln and Sugar Ann; lettuce, Buttercrunch, Nevada, Muir, Fusion and New Red Fire; Pumpkin, Neon and Big Moose; Spinach, Space; tomato, Roma, Early Girl, Celebrity, Mountain Fresh Plus, Big Beef and Supersweet 100; Heirloom tomato, Chef’s Choice, Buffalosun, Juliet and Sungold; squash, Buttercup; watermelon, Sweet Dakota Rose, and herb, Lemon basil. He also gave tips on how to water: avoid overhead irrigation, irrigate in morning, water deeply, not frequently, and mulch.
