Scary scam surfaces in Sheridan County

The following is a scam that has been sent by email to unsuspecting internet subscribers, with at least one received in the Sheridan County Area. Sheridan County Sheriff Trent Naser indicated that other similar scams may have been received at other homes and business email accounts and should be reported to local law enforcement as quickly as possible.
The scam makes use of fear of the unknown and unfamiliar and may be damaging to social relationships within communities. Many who are already fearful of other nationalities and ethnic groups may react out of proportion to the actual threat, which is essential none. The entire thing is a hoax designed to coerce people into sending money in the belief that they will be able to protect themselves and loved ones from being killed by those who sent the email. No such group of people exists, said Naser, nor would the small amount of money demanded be a “realistic” amount that a “legitimate” terrorist or assassinator would demand.
If you received these or other demands for money or information by email or telephone, call local law enforcement immediately for assistance and/or procedures to stop the unwanted solicitation. The local number to call is 701-363-2200.
