Sam Kirschman celebrates his 100th birthday

Sam Kirschman, a lifelong resident of McClusky, celebrated his 100th birthday on Wednesday, Feb. 2.
Sam and his wife, Ella (Heitzman), farmed and milked cows on their farm that was located one mile south of McClusky for most of their lives.
Upon retirement, they moved to McClusky, later becoming residents of the Sheridan Memorial Home.
Sam and Ella were married on July 1, 1937, in McClusky and celebrated their 70th anniversary in 2007. They raised one daughter, Grace.
In a short history of the couple, Beverley Zingg wrote, “Their first farm home was 11 miles southwest of McClusky. After five years, while Sam and Ella were milking, the house caught fire. Ella saw the flames and rushed in to save their baby daughter Grace. They then moved another building on the farm in which to live.”
Zingg and her husband and family were neighbors “across the road” from the Kirschman family farm for many years.
Neighbors and townspeople pitched in to help them refurnish and replace their lost replacements. But it just didn’t seem like home anymore, the couple noted.
